The Institute For Figuring began a Satellite Reef program in 2007 as a way for local communities to participate in its Crochet Coral Reef project (2005-present). Satellites have since been hosted in cities across the U.S. and Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.

The Del Rio Satellite Reef is the newest addition to this worldwide reefing network. It will be created locally by an undercurrent of artists/makers working individually and collaboratively to create a body of crocheted works. The culmination for the project will be an extensive installation at the Firehouse Gallery in November 2016.

Come participate in this amazing project—whether you are an experienced crocheter or a novice beginner!  Over the next year, workshop facilitators will lead crocheting sessions throughout the Del Rio community, both at the Firehouse and in other locations. The crocheted forms for the DRSR should represent coral formations which are hyperbolic structures as well as other non-hyperbolic marine organisms. Click here for information on crocheting hyperbolic forms.
